"As the stories emerged, feelings shared and the impact of the offences understood, the mood in the room became lighter. The toddler vacated her parent's knee, moved around the room and chatted happily."

ELEMENTARY: cont'd from page 2
These discussions frequently result in community conferencing referrals. CCC continues to work closely with parents of all students referred, in the following areas:
  • parent council meetings, information in newsletters, home visits with parents and students
  • follow up contact after each meeting with their child
  • consultation with parents focussed on responding to identified strengths and challenges
  • supporting parents to see conflict as a learning opportunity for children
  • supporting parents in exploring safe and respectful ways to help their children accept responsibility for harmful behaviour

To discuss a referral, please contact Gail at 974-1962 or 816-9621.

Thank you to Naomi Johnson, Area V Director and to the following schools for participating in this pilot.

OBSERVER: cont'd from page 3
Everyone responded well to her heightened sense of well-being. The increased activity level of the toddler was a tangible indicator of the change in the comfort level of all present. In the end, the agreements the youth presented were genuine and the victims appreciated their efforts. The facilitators ensured the agreements were realistic so the youth could be successful in fulfilling them. The Conference ended positively with feedback from all the participants. The victim's recurring themes

of respect, for self and others, responsibility to the community and desire for closure were addressed and responded to effectively.

Upon reflection, powerful and lasting are two words that come to mind when I think about my first time experience
as an observer at CCC. Wounds of the victims and the community were healed. The offenders developed empathy for their victims, the community and their parents. As well, an investment was made into the well being of the community. The problem was owned by all present resulting in a positive outcome. I am grateful that I was witness to this restorative process.
